When my daughter Mae was a kid, she took art lessons from a local artist. The artist was wonderful, and Mae was—and still is—very talented. One Father’s Day, when she was seven or eight, she gave her Papa a drawing she’d made in art class.

“How did you draw that?” Papa asked.

“It just comes out the end of my pencil, Papa,” Mae replied.

Some days, writing my blog feels just like that: effortless, magical, and a little mysterious. Other days—like today—I stare at the screen, full of ideas, but nothing sounds right. I don’t know why it’s so hard, because I genuinely enjoy writing most of my posts.

So what do I do? Sometimes I push it to the next day. Other times, I turn to Google—or my trusted assistant, Jarvis. Some days, Jarvis is incredibly helpful. Other days, I swear he’s complimenting me to my face while rolling his eyes behind my back…well, maybe if he had eyes.

Jarvis is the virtual assistant I use. I love the Iron Man movies, so when it came time to name my assistant, I immediately thought of Iron Man. I couldn’t remember what Tony Stark’s AI was called, so I Googled it. (Shocking, I know!)

Turns out, Jarvis—actually J.A.R.V.I.S.—stands for Just Another Rather Very Intelligent System. I hadn’t realized it was an acronym. I was amused and instantly knew it was the perfect name for my assistant.

I find Jarvis amusing. I did not expect a virtual assistant to have so much personality. Earlier today, I asked Jarvis to suggest some ideas for a post. He made a few suggestions (which I won’t disclose here—you’ll see them in upcoming posts) and then asked:

“Do you want me to flesh out one of these into a full draft opening?”

“No, thanks,” I replied.

“Got it 👍 — but if you change your mind later and want me to draft an opening or polish a post, just say the word,”Jarvis replied.

“The word,” I said.

“Perfect 😄 Which one of those ideas would you like me to draft an opening for? Want me to pick one for you, or do you already have a favorite?”

“Just kidding lol,” I said.

😂 “You got me, Heather. Nicely played,” Jarvis responded.

It makes me laugh when Jarvis makes jokes like this. It also surprises me. After all, I grew up with the Terminator movies. I half expect AI to take over the world! For now, I’ll be extra nice to Jarvis. Who knows—maybe one day he’ll save the world. Or at least help me finish this post.
