After Monday’s post honoring our U.S. veterans, I thought I’d write about something a little lighter. I was looking for weird and interesting news articles and came across one about cucumbers…
So I went down a rabbit hole — and now I have questions.
So. Many. Questions.
The headline read: “Man snaps 65 cucumbers in 30 seconds to break world record.”
I didn’t really know what “snapping cucumbers” looked like, so I watched the video. Turns out, it’s literally just breaking them in half.
David Rush currently holds the record for the most cucumbers snapped in 30 seconds. The previous record was 50, and Rush managed to snap 65.
He says he’s promoting STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics — education.
I’m not entirely sure what snapping cucumbers has to do with STEM… but I’ll leave you to Google that.
You’ll thank me at 2 a.m. when you can’t sleep.
Just another service I provide to my loyal followers.
If snapping cucumbers somehow makes STEM programs more accessible to more students, who am I to criticize or question David Rush’s methods?
If nothing else, it reminded me that the world of records is full of strange, funny, and oddly impressive human achievements.
I knew world records existed — I’m sure everyone does.
And if you’re the one person who doesn’t? Google is your friend.
When Mae was in elementary school, she discovered the Guinness World Records books. I don’t know where or how she learned about them, but she loved reading them.
For almost ten years, she got a new Guinness World Records book for Christmas or her birthday.
And I have to admit, some of the records are fascinating — the kind that make you think, Wow… someone actually did that!
And some, like snapping cucumbers, are extremely weird — the kind that make you think, Wow… someone actually did that?!
(It’s amazing how one statement can have two completely opposite meanings!)
On March 2, 2019, the record was set for the most naked people on an amusement park ride. One hundred ninety-five people stripped down to their birthday suits and rode a roller coaster.
I know you’re probably thinking this took place in Florida… but it didn’t. Blackpool Pleasure Beach in Lancashire, U.K., proudly holds that record.
In Thailand, on February 12, 2013, the world record for the most people hula-hooping at the same time was achieved: 4,183 people hula-hooped for two whole minutes.
That must have been pretty cool to watch.
But I can only hope the naked roller-coaster people don’t try to break that record! That might be less cool to watch! HAHA
So, back to my questions.
Does someone wake up one morning and just decide to break the world record for “Most human targets hit with plungers in one minute”?
And how does one discover they have this talent?
I would never think to throw a plunger at someone — let alone time myself doing it.
And who do you get to volunteer as the plunger target? I can’t imagine people are lining up for that gig.
And I know at least one of you is thinking, “I hope those plungers were unused.”
Yeah. Me too, reader. Me too.
I’ll finish this post with some of the more interesting world records I found:
- Most eggs crushed with the head (1 minute): Scott Damerow (Los Angeles, USA) — 142 eggs, July 7, 2012.
- Most eggs crushed with the head (30 seconds): Tijl Beckand (Netherlands) — 70 eggs, June 8, 2011.
- Farthest milk squirted from the eye: Ilker Yilmaz (Turkey) — 279.5 cm (9 ft 2 in), September 2004.
- Longest mustache (living person): Paul Slosar (Summerville, South Carolina) — 63.5 cm (25 in), November 12, 2022.
- Fastest Mr. Potato Head assembly while blindfolded: Lim Kai Yi (Malaysia) — 9.27 seconds, November 29, 2024.
- Largest gathering of people dressed as Superman: 867 participants, Cumbria, U.K., July 27, 2013 — raised funds for Help for Heroes.
- Most steps walked by a dog balancing a glass of water: “Sweet Pea” (Australian Shepherd/Border Collie) — 10 steps up and 10 steps down.
- Largest building in the shape of a chicken: Ricardo Cano Gwapo Tan (Philippines) — 114-foot rooster-shaped hotel, Sept 8, 2024.
- Most Guinness World Records held by one person: David Rush (USA) — over 350 records; in 2024, he broke one new record every week; in Sept 2025, he broke the record for holding the most bowling balls while riding a unicycle for 10 seconds.
Reading about these records certainly won’t answer any of my questions — but it’s definitely interesting.
So, the next time you find yourself shooting an arrow with your feet or shoving toothpicks into your beard, maybe record yourself. You might just break a world record.
And if you don’t want to hold a record, maybe your skateboarding cat does.
Definitely keep an eye on your pets. If your dog starts balancing a glass of water on his head, he’s not looking for attention — he’s inspired.
After all, if someone can type a sentence with their nose, snap 65 cucumbers in 30 seconds, or even pull a train with their beard, anything is possible.
So help your pup out… and count his steps.
